River restoration and Wetland creation, Kendal
We worked closely with The Environment Agency to help create a newly re-meandered channel and Wetland in the middle of an Organic dairy farm.
The straightened stream wasn’t providing much habitat for fish or wildlife, yet wasn’t working for the agricultural land either. The family decided to allow the land to benefit wildlife and to store flood water in heavy rain. We created a new sinuous channel in the original course of the field and then dug a series of interconnected ponds and scrapes to help invertebrates and ground-nesting birds.
Within a very short time there were dragonflies depositing eggs in the newly formed scrapes and Snipe had moved into the Wetland. As the land vegetates after the works it will create excellent wetland habitat
